Károly Eggly is a Dutch and Romani-Hungarian artist and designer,
who creates visual stories about heritage, history and identity.
His aim is to introduce viewers to underrepresented topics.
In doing so, getting viewers familiar with the unfamiliar.
With a strong feeling for aesthetics and authenticity,
he creates printed matter and works using a variety of materials that aim to
trigger wonder and curiousness in its viewers.
Károly is currently studying at ArtEZ university of the Arts in Arnhem.
Inspired by Károly’s mixed heritage, Romani-Hungarian and Dutch.
Borderless is a book meant to preserve the rich history and culture of the Romani people,
the biggest ethnic minority group in Europe.
Borderless aims to shed light on the origin, culture and struggles of the Roma,
who are, unfortunately,
still victims of discrimination and social exclusion.
It showcases the past, while looking forward to the future of the Roma community.
Designed in a free-flowing way, this book guides you through the different chapters and topics.
Heavily relying on imagery, Borderless educates its readers while challenges current stereotypes.
The Swiss binding exposes the delicate French link stitch used to stitch this story together,
while allowing the book to be opened up fully to showcase the historic imagery.
REVISIT is a reimagination of OASE magazine issue 20, “Bloemen van het Kwaad”.
Treating the magazine like a building, Károly combined architecture with baroque art.
Inspired by old floorplans of iconic buildings like Chateau Versailles and the Pantheon of Rome.
Original articles from OASE issue 20 are typeset into famous floorplans.
Imagery is reduced to bitmaps, exposing the building blocks and foundations of images.
Moving through the magazine like a building, when reaching a new article,
the header and footer move up on the page.
The Swiss binding exposes the French link stitches, showing the foundation of the magazine.
Inspired by the many depictions of Holy Mary, “Maiden, Mother, Matron” explores the different phases of Mary’s life.
Through highlighting the symbolism in her body language, gazing eyes up or downwards,
open hands and facial expressions, exploring her story.
Through the archive of the Rijksmuseum, Károly carefully curated a visual story through artworks.
Each signature is individually wrapped in a coloured paper, corresponding with the phase of Mary’s life.
By opening and closing with the maiden, the book can be viewed as a non-linear story, just like Mary’s.
Bound together with a coptic binding technique, the book feels inviting to open up and be viewed,
while still feeling secure and firm.
